What are the layers of context/setting in this film that reveal the sense of darkness?
Within the movie, Spiderman 3, the contexts of revenge from the characters show sides of darkness and evil. Harry Osborn’s vengeance for his father’s death lead him to making immoral choices like making Mary Jane break Peter Parker’s heart. Peter Parker sought his own vengeance for his Uncle’s death when he discovers that the murderer’s associate was the Sandman. In solution to his problems with Harry Osborn, Peter confronts Harry in the Osborn mansion. This resulted in a brutal fight and many scars on Harry’s face from a bomb. On top of that, Eddie Brock, one of his colleagues, framed Spiderman in a picture showcasing that Spiderman was a criminal. To retaliate, Peter exposes the fraud and causes Eddie to be fired. And in reciprocation, Eddie goes to a church, praying for Peter’s death. With the purpose of revenge, these characters became corrupt and went to harsh measures to get even. The need of vengeance in one’s conscious hinders the goodness of an individual. The alien symbiote was another context revealing darkness in which it brought out evil in Peter Parker and Eddie Brock. The symbiote enhanced Spiderman’s powers; however, it darkened his personality. Influenced by the symbiote, Peter’s conscious was overwhelmed with anger and hatred. When Spiderman realized that the symbiote was corrupting him, he decided to get rid of it from his body. As was free of the symbiote, Eddie Brock coincidently was near for the symbiote to move to its next host. Since Eddie already had evil in him, the symbiote became one with Eddie. This created Venom, a criminal who sought a deadly vengeance of Spiderman.
The expression of darkness that I saw and that had an impact on me was how much Peter's character changed once his outfit was tainted by the black venom. I felt that he succumbed to this darker side too easily and I thought that he would have fought back more.
This is my video clip for the movie project. It is from the movie of Spiderman 3 where Eddie Brock becomes Venom.
